 Bevar Christiania

Stories - News - Facts - Commentsanto writes:

Christiania, the Free Town. Located in the middle of Copenhagen and in the hopes of anti-nazi dreamers like Fritz Lang, Christiania is the place where you can actually feel a real and honest connection with people and human beings. Of course it would be simplistic to believe that this relation comes naturally with everybody, no matter what. It is almost impossible with police-men and criminals that yet walk undisturbed through the streets and into the buildings of the only European Free Town.
However, this positive personal  relational disposition towards the good and the sane part of  each and one human being is pretty common inside the everyday lifestyle of the thousand and more people who live and participate to the life of the village. People are smiling through the trails, set among a wild nature, and are ready to talk and get to know and accept other people letting them free to express themselves and live their life free from any sort of compulsive attempt to pretend to be anything or anybody but themselves or to perform for the benefit of a pre-constructed self which may fit the boxes of the outside society, of its plastic office furniture and glass walls, that make Lego-like apartments. The conceptual distance with Western societies and forms of organizations is obvious, so obvious to become embarrassing when you see outsiders moving into the town, unable to open themselves to themselves either, walking like automatic machines able just to click on things they encounter but never really able to see or know anything. There is a sort of magic relation with the inner side of everything and everyone which is nurtured and respected in Christiania, that is almost impossible to believe possible outside of it, if not set in a fairy tale or in a wild ancestral world far away as an exotic, unreachable world. Christiania, instead, seems too close to be true.

Notwithstanding Copenhagen is used to fairy tales, Anders has not being able to change the mainly military and commercial side of the city’s soul which is still very cold and plain, no matter how much the great jazz musicians coming from all over the world try to warm up the cold nights of what they call the Tropical capital of Scandinavia. However, these wonderful creatures of the night who spice up minds and souls with improvisation and incredible performances find their refuge in Christiania from the freezing commercial musical scene they are used to be denied from. Sunday nights becomes open sessions which combine afro, reggae, rock, blues and jazz on the same stage and moment and to which every musician is invited to contribute.

Contribution, own personal effort into building their own houses and lives, respect for each one and intent to know each other in order to be more effective and helpful in the moment of need which every one may incur into life, personally and socially. These are the main features on which the village form of society is based on and the values the residents of Christiania believe in and live accordingly. Therefore, to feel at home and to find a home inside of yourself and next to trustworthy  neighbours is not difficult here. It is more a question of being disposed to work, and to work hard, in order to build, create, maintain, preserve, know and contribute beyond mere particular interests which happen to be incorporated into the more general and common ones of the community, to the point of becoming pretty much the same, all oriented as they are to the creation and conservation of a world which is in harmony with nature and in accordance with human needs. All pre-conditions which enable humanity and nature to flourish in time. How? Keeping cars out of the common space and substituting them with bikes and horses, keeping verbal and physical violence, weapons and hard drugs out of reach, and talking and sharing life, responsibilities and personal matters together. With all the effort it takes  to be responsible, creative and co-operative with the ecological and social system people build and rebuild everyday their own reality, find a source of energetic power into social exchanges and social settings which are filled up with conversations, drinking and weed smoking.
Hard drugs and close minded reaction such as violence and gangster groups are strongly disapproved and banned from the Free Town, which unfortunately had and still has to experience both in the worst way after the forceful action of the government which entered the open village with their guns and uniforms to chaste weed pushers out of the regulated and open market which the locals allowed in the main street of the village since its creation: the famous Pusher Street, one of the main tourist attractions in all Denmark after the Danish Beer industries. After the aggressive response of a conservative and frightened Parliament, Pusher Streets became the  wild land of criminals which started really menacing the local residents and the city. The police does not chaste them, however, as anyone may reasonably expect from them after such a determined act of intrusion. At the contrary, they show up in the morning and walk about until the late afternoon disturbing astonished and peaceful tourists, youngsters and people sitting drinking coffees and teas in the bars, and avoiding to show up during the night, in the Street which after there action has become impossible to film or do*****ent and so to control. The all question around the political actions and choices of the police, of the governmental interests beyond criminal traffics and the more than obvious discrimination of freedom, that Western societies impose on social forms, facilitates and encourages in fact the development of criminal acts and associations for the benefit of these same organizations. Consequently, it also prevents the development of a more secure, fair and sane human lifestyle. There should be no doubts on regard of what questions needs to be debated on the matter, and about what actions need  to be taken by citizens towards what needs to be seriously changed for what concerns modern social lifestyles and forms of democracy. The personal social commitment and responsibility every citizen should be aware of and willing to perform daily, beyond any form of delegation and blind faith into thirds, it’s a question everybody should think of standing for inside as well as outside Christiania. Protecting it to prevent the daily abuses this people experience from the police as well as from the criminals which surround them. Dignity for everybody, concrete help for people in need and a strong opposition to the violence and the hard drugs which dominates and controls big Western cities -including Copenhagen itself-  should be the priority on the agenda of people who wants to create a better world for themselves and their fellow human beings to build the future. Indeed, everybody with a sane mind would like to know and be able to respect and understand their own neighbours to the point of leaving their kids walking and playing around together in a neighbourhood free from criminality and cars. In Christiania, what was at the beginning just a concentration of dirt and old military abandoned structures, became a paradise of art and creative ideas which materialized into futuristic and ecologically sustainable architectures totally integrated in the nature. The poor people of the neighbourhood and the young people who moved inside the empty, abandoned location in the seventies found in it a chance and a free open space where to take kids out and let them play free. Noticing afterward the careless attitude of the rest of the city and of the government about the matter, they eventually moved their poor few things to live there and build a serene life according to the little economic means and the will and sweat they had to create a future for themselves and for their children in peace and harmony with each other and with the land. A land that, for their own understanding and agreement, did not and ever will belong to anybody but to itself, to hearth, as it had been gently conceived as nourishment and hospitality for all human beings and its generations to come from other enlightened societies and cultures before them. Together with the water, the trees, the flowers, the birds and the fishes which populate the area, the new inhabitants created a human paradise centered on dialog and consensus that well combined with the precious natural richness they had found and had been able to appreciate and recognize among the dirt and the rests of the past wars and climate of defence the Danish army had only been able to recognize to what would have become the town of freedom. Scented with the perfume of spiritual and sensorial harmony, the land of freedom is a rare piece of awareness of what the entire world should be conceived as. Freedom, without any need to stand or protect under or behind any flag or icons. Christiania’s flag is made up of three simple yellow dots, which are just an iconographic contribution to the name of the town, as in fact they stand for the dots of the “I” letters that constitute the name Christiania itself –which has been acquired by the neighbourhood of Copenhagen it stands on, that is to say, Christians Havn.

Christiania was born on what was once the poor industrial location of Danish and immigrated workers, pushed to the borders of the city by their rich owners who happen to be now attracted by the healthy –and in their terms wealthy- actual ecological and urban shape of the place. What was once a piece of land of no interest, reason that induced the government to sign a contract of location which looked very much like a donation to the new pro-active inhabitants, is now a hot subject of contrast on which the current conservative government leaded by Mr. Anders Fogh Rausmussen do not even want to discuss about, if not in court holding a do*****ent which has been wittily modified during time to favour new urban plans of construction and destruction of the natural ecosystem.

What do the people of the peaceful land of Freedom do for it? They try to talk, to present innovative plans of urban sustainable development and to export with their attitude the consensus to the outside narrow world of pre-made standardized laws which should apply to everybody and everything unconditionally. Normalization is the way chosen by the government. Learning from nature and from experience is the way chosen by the people of Christiania.  However, it seems quite impossible for it to happen and to yet be considered the only way to approach human controversies, as well as it is quite impossible to accept the idea that land, and so hearth, can be owned by an ideal, a person or more, and by anything which is not a possible Creator who may feel offended,  as a kid would feel, from not having access to play with an uncontaminated and wild nature, for the benefit of some tons of money to refill the robbed treasures of the government.
