Christiania - for tourists and traveller's

A personal guided tour

Thousands of guests are visiting Christiania all through the year. Most of these are just walking around looking at the daily life, enjoy the tamed wilderness of the nature  in the quite large area. A comfortable walk  around  the place takes  approximately about one hour.

And there are many hidden unique visual treasures to find.

I will reveal some of this for you in my tour.

There are some unwritten rules in Christiania which most people obey without questioning once they know these.

A major rule for visitors is: Don't play smart with your camera. Taking Photos is not forbidden in general, but in the area around Pusherstreet people react violent in certain situations which might result  in an unpleasant  experience. Just respect the signs  saying NO PHOTO  set up in this area  and there shouldn't be any problems.  Do not point your camera at persons  who deny to be on a picture. Remember it is not a zoo nor a museum. Christiania is a living village  in the city of Copenhagen  where guests  are welcome.

There are no places in Christiania that offer accommodation unless you have personal contact to inhabitants that invite you into their homes.

Camping is not allowed but tolerated in some places  with  the allowance of the nearest inhabitants. They are the ones who probably have to clean up the mess if there is after people left their camping ground. Respect this if your plan is to make  camping holidays in Christiania. A donation to the area cash eases peoples minds  about campers. Ask for the area cashier to do this. Still, this doesn't by you any rights, it just helps the Christiania community to cover the constant increasing  infrastructural costs.

Most visitors get to Christiania by public transport. Bus line 66 takes you right to the entrance by the Grå Hal.
If you want to enter Christiania through the main entrance you would need to go back  a little. The other option is to get off the bus one stop before at the church. This church by the way is also worth a visit if you don't fear hight it is possible to  get a really nice view  over Christiania and the rest  of Copenhagen. From up there you can also get a very good impression  of Christiania's size.
From this bus-stop you have to walk a little to get to the old main-entrance on the corner of Baadsmandsstræde and Prinsessegade.
When you enter Christiania through the little gate you have a long brick-building to your left.
It is housing various activities. A little art and craftworks-shop in connection with the Info-cafe. A youth-club for the Christiania-youngsters. Christiania-TV and radio is located on the first floor.
In the middle of the house you can find the entrance to the well known restaurant "Spiseloppen" and Christianias gallery "Stadens museum for kunst - Galloperiet" on the second floor. In the gallery you are also able find guides for a guided tour through Christiania.
"Loppen"  a well  established play-house for international music  is located  on the first  floor.
And sometimes if your lucky and the doors are open you can also take a look at the old-timer cars of the Ford T club that is located in the bottom of the old storage house.
A private initiative sponsored a basketball court for the locals aside the playground for the small children. The trees you can see havn't always been here. The whole area has been shaped through the time of Christianias existence.
Opposite to Loppen-building  is the carpenter workshop  "Optimisten"
A little further on behind Optimisten you can see Christianias Machine Hall from where the renovation work is organized, right beside is the recycle station.
I shall not forget to mention the graffiti covered Skater bowl Alis in Wonderland that attracted a number of skateboard champions to train here.
When you got this far you probably see a little market place. This is "Karl Madsens Plads", named after the first lawyer who defended the Christiania idea in the early 70th. Here you can get smoking gear, as pipes and paper, but also T-shirts, Christiania merchandise, silver and refreshments if you are hungry and need a fast snack.
Now you are facing Pusherstreet, this place is only interesting if you in need of something to get stoned on. Do not take photos in this area!!! People might react violent towards your camera!!!
In the beginning of Pusherstreet is the Sunshine bakery taking care of the supply of cakes, bread and coffee.
Opposite to the bakery is Operaen a gathering place with different activities.
Now there are different options to continue your trail through Christiania. It depends on if your here to be a part of the hash-tourism or whether you came to see what Christiania really is about.
Hash-tourists find all for their needs within the next few hundred meters from this point. Including entertainment, food and cold and warm drinks in the bars and cafés in the area.
Woodstock is a nice pit-stop for a refreshment at considerable low  prices. In the summer there are very often outdoor  concerts  and the crowd of people around the place has a very international character.
Not far from there you can find Cafe Nemoland constructed into the old bunkers of the previous fortress. Also here are occasionally open air concerts in the summer period, usually Sunday afternoon where you could enjoy  a cold hemp-beer in the beer-garden and listen to life music.
People who are not into the alcohol scene prefer to go to Café Månefiskeren to have a sandwich or a drink.
In the middle between these places the Green-shop is serving small dishes around lunch time.
All the described places so far are  in the  center of Christiania close to or on Pusherstreet.
But of course as mentioned before Christiania is not just fun and entertainment even though it seems to a lot of people. There are also quite a few artists and craftsman/women that put their special character to the culture in Christiania. Some of them have their workshop and gallery in Pusherstreet opposite to Woodstock. Not far from there you find Kvindesmedien the womens blacksmith shop  with their female fantasies in  heavy metal. The production of the famous three-wheeled Christiania transport bike started once in the other end of this building.
Now the place is used for sale and assembling of these bikes.  In  the  bottom  of the next building  is an Antique  and Oven shop.
When you ended up here so far you have left the part of Christiania with most of the workshops and bars. Of course there are people living in all of the houses you have seen this far. Probably your eyes catched the sight of three really big buildings in this area.  The one you see to your right when you enter Christiania from the corner described up in the text is Fredens Ark, the largest house in Christiania with about a hundred persons calling it their home.
Standing at the beginning of Pusherstreet straight on you can see a large green hall. Looking to the left you can see the grey Hall in the background.
Both places have once been riding halls and are build on the base of a wooden construction. Beautiful architecture from the 19th century, if you are into this kind of things you really should take a  closer look.
The Grey hall is used as a concert hall and for other space demanding events.
The green hall is the Christiania building market where the citizens of Christiania can purchase their building materials, warmth energy supply and other useful things. Christiania merchandise is also available here.
Now let me assume  that your walk brought you  in front of the green hall ,  just beside Cafe Nemoland.
From here you can look along Christiania Langgaden, this is the one called Christiania on google-maps.
It is the longest street in christiania, therefore the name. When you go down there you have the future forest and Café Månefiskeren at your left.  You pass  Christianias cinema  in  the same building as  Café  Månefiskeren. Behind that building  there  is Christianias  common bath-house  and sauna. In this  building there is also the Health house, here you can get first aid and medical help on herbal base, massage and other revitalizing treatment.
Your next stop should be Indkøbscentralen,  Christianias  grocery shop, here you can almost by everything  you need  to  survive. Most of the articles are organic and the shop has a really good assortment of beer and  organic juices.
Get your refreshments here if you plan to take the walk around the rest of Christiania. This walk takes approximately one hour in a comfortable tempo.
This far you have got a light description of the center of Christiania where the majority of citizens have their homes in the old military buildings.
Behind Indkøbscentralen you are getting out into the country-side of Christiania as we call it here. In the early days of the Free state people started to build their dwellings along the lake-side. Old military houses and shacks as well as bunkers found new  usage through the time. With a lot of fantasy homes where created to what you are still able to see now. If the governmental plans are going to be executed this part of Christiania will vanish forever. It is not just the inhabitants of this area that disappear  with their plans it is also the  unique wild nature that is gentle taken care of by the residents.
The variety of flora and fauna is unique for a central location in a major city. This small natural treasure would be destructed by the plans of the government.
Do yourself the favor and take a walk around, take a break from the stressful city-life, but please don't litter, there are rubbish bins everywhere by the waysides.

Some other things you should respect while guesting Christiania: Don't enter houses uninvited. Don't steal or take things even it looks as if it doesn't belong to anyone. Always remember that Christiania is not a Zoo nor a museum. People don't live here as show-cases but for the sake of living in harmony with each other and nature.
